The three-member Board of Commissioners of Vanderburgh County is both the executive and the legislative body of county government.  In general the board is responsible for the administration of county business.  It may enact ordinances to meet local conditions and exercise the authority vested in the board by the state legislature. 

The commissioners are also responsible for the administration of The Old Courthouse.

SOME GENERAL POWERS AND DUTIES INCLUDE:

  1. Receive bids and award contracts for county public works projects.
  2. Supervise construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.
  3. Perform certain election functions such as the establishment of precincts and the provision of polling places.
  4. Prepare the part of the county budget over which the commissioners have direct control.
  5. Serve as members of the County Drainage Board.
  6. Fix and post speed limits and yield or stop signs on any road in their jurisdiction.
  7. Serve on the Solid Waste Management District Board.
  8. Approve rezonings in their jurisdictions.
  9. Make appointments to board, commission and other agencies as provided by law.
  10. Responsible for the operation of Burdette Park.
  11. Responsible for providing offices for county government, including a jail.

Generally speaking, the Board as a whole serves as the "Mayor of the County".
