The city of Evansville gets all of its drinking water from the Ohio River.  The Ohio River is 981 miles (1582 km) long.  It starts where the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River meet in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  It ends in Cairo, Illinois, where it drains into the Mississippi River.  The Ohio River flows through or borders 6 states: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois.

The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) continually monitors conditions along the Ohio River.  The Evansville Water Department is on the Water User Advisory board for ORSANCO.
