Bio

Jonathan Weinzapfel was elected Mayor of the City of Evansville in November 2003.  He is currently serving a four-year term that began January 1, 2004.

Prior to being elected Mayor, Jonathan was appointed as the State Representative for District 76 in 1999 and was twice elected to that position.  During his tenure as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, he served as Chairman of the Courts and Criminal Code Committee, the Environmental Affairs Committee and the Environmental Quality Service Council.  Jonathan also served on the Financial Institutions, the Judiciary and the Public Health Committee.

One of Jonathan’s major accomplishments through the Indiana General Assembly was helping to found the Southwestern Indiana Regional Development Commission and serving as the group’s first President.  The Commission brings Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties together to promote regional economic development and to improve the quality of life in southwestern Indiana.

Also as a legislator, Jonathan led the effort to obtain a four-year engineering degree program for the University of Southern Indiana and was instrumental in keeping the Evansville Psychiatric Children’s Center open.  He authored laws to address southwestern Indiana’s methamphetamine problems, clean up the environment, promote economic development and ensure fair and accurate elections.

Jonathan is the son of Ralph and Sylvia Weinzapfel.  His father retired from Memorial High School where he was a teacher and coach for 38 years.  He is currently a member of the Posey County Council.  Sylvia is the Executive Director of the YWCA of Evansville.  Both have dedicated their lives to public service and have inspired their six children to civic-minded and involved in their communities.

Jonathan attended St. Philips Elementary School.  He graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in 1984 and continued his education at Indiana University, where received a Bachelor’s degree in 1988.  While working as an aide to U.S. Congressman Frank McCloskey, Jonathan earned a Master’s degree from Georgetown University.  He then attended the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis and graduated with a Juris Doctorate.

Jonathan’s previous employment includes working as Public Relations Director at Old National Bank, serving as the Business Liaison for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, and serving as Deputy Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Labor.

Jonathan is 38-years-old and lives on Evansville’s west side with his wife, Patricia, and their three children, Nathaniel, Benjamin and Eleanor.  Patricia is a former news reporter for WFIE Channel 14 Evansville.  She is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Southern Indiana.
