Hours for marriage applications are from 7:30am to 3:45pm. NO EXCEPTIONS AFTER 3:45PM (Monday-Thursday)  NO EXCEPTIONS AFTER 3:15PM ON FRIDAYS

 


Where to Apply

Indiana residents must obtain a license in the county in which at least one of them resides. Out of state residents must obtain a marriage license in the county in which the marriage will be performed.  Both applicants must apply together in person.

Fees

If at least one of the applicants is a resident of Vanderburgh county, the fee is $18.00 CASH at the time of application. If both applicants are non-residents, the fee is $60.00 CASH at the time of application. NO PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Identification

Applicants 18 years of age or older must show a valid driver's license, with their current address. Applicants under 18 must have an original certified copy of their birth certificate. If the applicant is not a licensed driver, a state-issued identification card, original certified birth certificate, baptismal certificate with date of birth, military I.D., passport, life insurance policy with date of birth, school I.D., or transcripts of school records with date of birth may be accepted.

Waiting Period

A marriage license can be issued on the same day of application. There is no legal waiting period to obtain your marriage license and no witnesses are required. If you do not have the necessary requirements on the day you apply, your application will be held for no longer than 60 days. After that it will be voided. Once issued, a marriage license is valid for sixty days from the date of issuance during which time the marriage must be performed. The duplicate marriage certificate, marriage license, and record of marriage are to be completed and filed in the office of the clerk of the county in which the marriage license was issued within 30 days of the marriage solemnization.  TOP

Age Requirements

Applicants must be 18 or older. Applicants age 17 must have parental consent. Applicants age 15 and 16 must have a court order.  TOP

Previous Marriages

If there have been any previous marriages, the application requires information on the month and year it ended as well as the manner (e.g. divorce, death, annulment).  >TOP

Other Requirements You Need To Know

  • Applicants must have the names and ages of any dependant children.
  • Applicants must know the state their Parent's were born in, where they currently reside and Mothers' maiden name.
  • Applicants must know their state of birth, if using identification other than birth certificate.
  • Applicants must know their highest grade completed of school

Pre-Marriage Counseling

Further marriage preparation assistance and counseling is available through Community Marriage Builders (CMB), a local non-profit organization. CMB provides the following services for nominal fees:  marraige counseling and referrals, pre-martial inventories, marriage preparation and enrichment classes, marriage mentoring and other resources. Cermonies are performed in the Clerk's Office.   If you wish to have the ceremony performed in the Clerk's Office, please call (812) 435-5364 to make an appointment.
