History
DMD was initially created in 1975, for the purpose of administrating the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for the City of Evansville. In the ensuing years, the duties of the Department have been expanded to include a broader range of responsibilities. While the administration of the CDBG program is still a major function of Metropolitan Development, its scope has expanded into the operation of a number of programs utilizing resources that relate to community and economic development.

Mission
To encourage, stimulate and participate in community development, economic development, neighborhood stabilization and neighborhood revitalization in the City of Evansville.

Administration
Administers the Community Development Block Grant, Emergency Shelter Grant, HOME Investment Partnership and other various federal and state grants which benefit low to moderate income people; initiates activities to strengthen, revitalize and stabilize the City's targeted neighborhoods; coordinates economic development activities, including business recruitment, expansion and retention.

Redevelopment
Coordinates redevelopment activities including Walnut Centre, Jacobsville and South Governor Redevelopment Areas; participates in the development of the downtown area.

Historic Preservation Service
Provides services to develop and expand preservation activities through public awareness and education; conducts Section 106 reviews and National Register nominations.

Neighborhood Inspection Services
Upgrades existing housing by enforcing the City's Housing Standards Code or in the case of unsafe structures, assists in the elimination of the structures through demolition; provides enforcement through the Code Enforcement Hearing Officer and Vanderburgh County Court system.

Weed Control
Operates seasonal office to enforce the City's weed ordinance which requires property owners to keep grass and other vegetation less than 9 inches in height.
